I must be stark raving mad trying to predict the result of the second game of a season but I’ve been badgered into it.
Everton have done well both early season and at Elland Road in recent years so if I was going to any game, it would be this one.
They went 36 visits without a win at Leeds but they’ve now won 2 of the last 3 but if they pull it off this afternoon it’ll be the first time in 54 games they’ve won 2 on the bounce there.
Leeds don’t like losing their first home game of a season and in the 16 seasons they played their first game of a new season at home in a top league, they have only lost once and, they have not lost 2 consecutive games at the start of a season in the top league, since 1980.
Last season Everton won at Leeds and Leeds won at Everton but Everton have been unbeaten in the first 2 games of a new season in the last 9 and could make it 10 on the trot this afternoon.
Last season Everton were pretty decent on the road, winning 11 away matches and they have kept a clean sheet in 6 of the last 8 away Prem games. Benitez though will be looking to keep his record against Leeds going strong as his teams have won all 3 games at Leeds, in all competitions and they were all with different teams.
I think the result Leeds copped for at Man Utd was just one of those days because in that 1 game they let in as many goals as they had done in the last 7 games of last season. Usually they are pretty solid at the back.
I do not see Leeds conceeding 5 and I don’t see Everton scoring 3 again this weekend.
Leeds will have to make sure they keep on top of Calvert Lewin when crosses come into the box because no player has scored more headed goals than him since the start of the 2019-20 season. He’s very good in the air.
Everton looked ordinary for much of last weeks game against Southampton, who I reckon are bankers to go down this year. This will be a much tougher game and I reckon if they get out of Leeds with a draw, they will have done well.
- DRAW @ 3.6
- 1-1 @ 7.8
- 2-2 @ 15
