A total of 52 entries – up from 47 in 2021 – have been received for the Group One Betfair Sprint Cup.

The six-furlong contest, which was first staged in 1966, is Haydock Park’s best Flat race of the season and forms part of the QIPCO British Champions Series. The 2022 renewal will be the 56th and takes place on Saturday 3rd September.

Heading Betfair’s opening market as the 9-2 Favourite is Perfect Power (Richard Fahey), winner of the Group One Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last month and set to appear next in the Saturday’s Group One Darley July Cup at Newmarket.

Emaraaty Ana (Kevin Ryan), successful in the 2021 Betfair Sprint Cup, is entered once again and if the six year old was to double up this year he would become only the second dual winner after Be Friendly, who landed the first two running’s in 1966 and 1967.

The Betfair Sprint Cup is one of the very few contests to have eluded trainers Aidan O’Brien and Charlie Appleby, the reigning champion Flat trainers in Ireland and the UK respectively.

Appleby’s three entries are headed by Naval Crown and Creative Force, the first two home in the Group One Platinum Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot while O’Brien’s trio of contenders includes last season’s Group One Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Tenebrism, who could revert to sprinting after two starts at a mile so far this season.

France has claimed the prestigious sprint on five occasions and the one French-trained entry this year is the Aga Khan’s three year old Rozgar (Francis Graffard), last seen when winning the six-furlong Listed Prix Marchand d’Or at Chantilly in early June.

Barry Orr, Head of Horse Racing PR at Betfair, commented: “The sprinting division has been the highlight of the Flat season so far and with this strong set of entries it is very encouraging for that trend to continue.”
